i am. . .
Sally Johnson, a life long gardener with a particular passion for growing native plants. I am certified in  Native Plant Horticulture and  Invasive Plant Management.  I have served on the Board of the Rhode Island Wild Plant Society and been a Master Gardener.   I hold a degree in geography from Dartmouth College and a masters degree in marine policy from URI.   When I am not gardening, I am weaving, playing tennis or on the water.

I look forward to working with you!

what i do. . .

garden coaching
Do you need help figuring out what the next steps are for your garden or landscape?   Are you confused by which plant is the right for your garden?   Want to know where to get native plants? I can help.

site assessment
Do you want to understand how the wind, sun, invasive plants, stormwater, soil impact what you should plant?  I'll meet you at your place, spend as much time as you need talking about your ideas and goals and present you with plant recommendations for particular areas of your site.   The final report will be a web page which we can build on if you decide to take on a project.

garden design and installation
Do you need help planning, removing a lawn and/or planting a beautiful, functional garden that supports pollinators, birds and other life, cleans stormwater and is resilient to climate change?   I can draw up plans, source your plants and work with you to get the job done.

native plant tours and public speaking
Are you on a land trust, garden club or horticultural organization that wants to know more about restoring sites, planting native gardens and maintenance ideas?  I can present one of my standard lectures or work with you to devise a new one that will appeal to your audience.

invasive plant management
Do you want to develop and/or implement strategies to rid properties of bittersweet, phragmites, mugwort, and other botanical thugs?  I can assess your problem and help develop a strategy to combat invasives.   I can also file Rhode Island coastal invasive species management permits, necessary.

what they say. . .

woodland garden

Spring 2020 we decided to significantly reduce our existing lawn area and build a native, woodland garden. One call to Sally and she was “on it”! She answered endless questions, and monitored our progress. We heartily recommend her to anyone seeking great garden advice.

pollinator garden

Sally proved to be an incredibly valuable guide through the process of replacing our front lawn with native plants, fitting both our vision and budget. She provided a comprehensive plan with various options, educated us about the plantings, and enlisted a skilled crew for yard preparation. Beyond her professional expertise, her prompt responses to our queries and ongoing support stood out. Impressed by her work and dedication, we’re planning to have her assist with our backyard project as well. We highly recommend Sally for any landscaping needs.
